A urinary tract infection — a painful infection of urine in the bladder and sometimes the kidneys — is one of the most common bacterial infections in women. In fact, a lot of patients of Shaheen Misbah, MD, an AMITA Health Medical Group family practice physician based in Elgin, IL, come in for UTI treatment several times per year. In this video, Dr. Misbah talks about the condition and how to treat it effectively.

UTI SYMPTOMS
* Burning sensation while urinating
* Frequent, urgent need to urinate
* Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen
* Cloudy, dark or strange-smelling urine
* Fever or chills

WHAT CAUSES A UTI?
According to Dr. Misbah, two common risk factors for urinary tract infections are constipation and “waiting to void” too long (a common issue with female teachers and truck drivers). Certain surgical procedures can also increase your UTI risk, particularly if they involve urinary catheters.

HOW TO TREAT A UTI
Antibiotics are typically used in UTI treatments. A variety are used, from first-line medicine to more intensive medications in the event of an allergic reaction or contraindication. The length of medication can also vary depending on the patient’s unique health history and condition.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A UTI GOES UNTREATED?
An untreated UTI can spread to the kidneys and develop into pyelonephritis (kidney infection), a much more complex condition that can require hospitalization and intravenous medication. That’s why Dr. Misbah recommends that you see your healthcare provider as soon as you begin experiencing UTI symptoms.
